Buckingham Estate

Buckingham Estate Reserve Shiraz 2005
“This exciting cool-climate Shiraz is made for their UK agents Buckingham Vintners in Western Australia, and it shows that region’s subtlety and calm. This is not one of your bludgeoning Aussie shirazes, brash and bouncy, but a more refined specimen of fruitiness, with delicate (though decisive) tannins and a warmly, well-knitted texture.”

"I have discovered a regal wine – and it is nothing to do with the fact that it’s called Buckingham Estate…..The Buckingham Estate is a reserve shiraz, from Australia and it’s a stunner…. With claims such as “a wine of outstanding quality” and “minty high notes” the description seemed a bit pretentious, if not to say high-fallutin’. I almost wanted it to fail, but the label lived up to its billing. The colour is deep purple and I thought it might be a touch heavy, especially with an alcohol level of 14.5 per cent! None of it; this is sumptuously rich, almost darkly satanic, smooth and silky. Don’t know about those ‘minty high notes’ but it’s got a lovely, subtle spicy finish: berry fruits or black pepper, take your pick. One with the wow factor and definitely ideal for the Christmas table, even with the plum pud."

Buckingham Estate Cabernet-Petit Verdot 2005
"A red wine full of delicious cassis aromas with a touch of violets. Ripe blackberry and plum flavours with velvety tannins."

"UK-based Buckingham Vintners have created this label with a mission statement: "we are combining the best elements of 'Old and New World' wines", and on this evidence they are doing a very nice job at a rock-bottom price. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot from Southeastern Australia, the wine has a soft, enveloping nose of mulberry and spice, with clove and cinammon, and lots of autumnal berry warmth. On the palate it is medium-bodied, and although that raft of spicy, mulled wine and rich berry fruit continues, there is a juicy, brighter quality too, with a bit of cut to the wine through the mid-palate, with gentle tannins and decent acidity. The finish allows the smoky, spicy character to dominate again, but the overall effect is of an easy-drinking, fruity wine, but one with a bit of light and shade to it."

Buckingham Estate Verdelho-Chardonnay
"provides a mixture of lemons, apples, pears and pineapples, making up a cheerful summery cocktail. This full bodied white has a sprightly finish, and would be ideal with sea-food and chicken dishes. Should spend at least a couple of hours in the fridge before drinking."
Peter Homer, Chichester Observer

"The Buckingham Estate Crown Duals aims to combine the best elements of old and new world wines. Last year saw fine, mild weather with little rain promoting ripe tropical fruit aromas with good intensity. The Verdelho Chardonnay produce has intense fruit flavours which leave a long, clean finish."

Buckingham Estate Chardonnay
“A well-priced and surprisingly classy Chardonnay from South Australia, this manages to be both subtle and restrained, yet tropical fruit. It is perfect with seafood dishes or Thai-style stir-fried chicken and rice.”

Buckingham Estate Shiraz
“Best Buy. This wine, which came top of the group by an impressive distance, was popular with all tasters, who loved its smoothness and ‘great weight, breadth and intensity’ of cranberry-cherry and cedar-spice flavours. One taster felt it had ‘plenty of character to match the turkey, and all the related flavours too!’ …our Best Buy is remarkably good value.”
